POSITION: Museum Assistant 

Pay Level: Depending on Experience

Work Status: Part Time Year Round 

Work Schedule: Generally, works up to 21 hours per week; ability to work Saturday regularly in the summer; schedule may vary. 

 NATURE OF WORK 

The Museum of the Beartooths mission is to is to collect, preserve, and share the rich history, art, and culture of the Stillwater County area. The purpose of this Museum is for the enjoyment of the citizens and visitors of this area and for the acquisition, preservation and protection of historical records, art, archival and museum art objects; historical sites, monuments, maintenance and operation of an archive, museum, art, and historical places.

The Museum Assistant will support the Executive Director and other staff as a team in a variety of museum tasks including staffing the museum during open hours, creating social media content, performing and assisting with research, gift shop sales, collection care, and visitor attention. The Museum Assistant may be asked to complete other duties to support the Museum of the Beartooths. The Museum Assistant provides excellent and friendly customer service to every person who visits the Museum. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

The individual in the Museum Assistant role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the Museum Director. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties with or without reasonable accommodations. 

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive: 

  • Open and close the museum during regular open hours, welcoming and supporting museum visitors from their entrance to their exit and acting as a steward for all artifacts and history of Stillwater County.  
  • Generate social media posts and content to promote museum programs, artifact highlights, and events. 
  • Assist with special events as needed. 
  • Follow the Museum Collection Policies and Procedures.
  • Work with Museum staff to schedule and manage tour groups, and other activities.
  • Identify and report maintenance concerns.
  • Assist with research requests as needed and the ability to do research as needed.  
  • Adhere to employment policies, standards, and regulations including but not limited to proper attire, safety procedures, and overall professionalism. 
  • Professional, energetic, and creative qualities desired.

OTHER DUTIES: 

Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following: 

  • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, and timely manner both verbally and written when dealing with all museum employees, citizens, and visitors. 
  • The ability to work weekends occasionally is required. 
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving facility guests with patience, good judgment and with diplomacy. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.). 
  • Must have the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, e.g. copier, and computer. 
  • Ability to handle telephone calls and walk-ins in a courteous and professional manner, with a variety of people and temperaments in potentially stressful/high volume situations. 
  • Proficient with social media.
  • Demonstrated personal effectiveness, credibility, thoroughness, flexibility, and collaboration skills in adhering to and advancing the Museum’s mission and values. 
  • Demonstrates pride, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in dealing with the public.
  • Experience working in a museum environment is helpful, but not required.
